Can you briefly describe the motivation behind Tieto’s
Lifecare Sampling solution?
GE: Lifecare Sampling is Tieto’s first portable solution
for laboratories. It addresses the pain points associated
with taking samples at the care wards in order to improve
patient safety and overall quality of samples. The solution
is fully integrated into the workflow and is connected to the
laboratory information system, allowing clinicians to track
the status of the sample in real-time from the order through
to the analytical phase and the result. Lifecare Sampling
ultimately contributes to faster, more accurate laboratory
diagnostics and improved treatment and patient outcomes.
How does Lifecare Sampling
achieve improved diagnostics?
GE: We accomplish this by
integrating several elements into
the solutions: Patient safety is
ensured by letting lab technologists
or nurses verify a patient’s identity
before a sample is taken by
scanning the patient’s ID tag.
Furthermore, each sample carries
a unique identification number,
which is supported by the workflow.
What is unique is how our solution
instructs users to administer tests, handle samples and how
it allows to key in deviations from the standard protocol, all
of which contribute to a better, more effective diagnosis. For
example, Lifecare Sampling tells the user which type and
colour of tube to take and how to handle the sample, e.g.,
‘Keep sample dark’.
AT: Before the test is taken, the solution provides the
lab assistant with information such as relevant facts on
the patient and risks associated with the testing, such
as hepatitis in case the information is available from the
patient record. Any deviations from the normal routine can
be added to the system and help reach a more accurate
diagnosis and hence treatment of the patient. Take for
example a cholesterol study: Based on a sample, a doctor
will arrive at a different decision if he also has information
that the patient has not eaten.
Furthermore, the laboratory knows
how sampling is proceeding on the
wards and can support the sampling
team directly if they have problems.
Due to this fast reaction, delays in
the sample taking are minimized
to ensure that the lab results can
be produced in as timely a manner
GE: As there are potentially 800
standard tests to perform in a
hospital, lab or a care facility, it is
impossible for lab assistants to know every detail of each
one. So this solution is of enormous help and also speeds
up the process, as users have all information at their
disposal and do not need to check in with someone else.
When will Lifecare Sampling be released?
AT: Tieto is testing the solution in Finland and it will
be introduced later in 2014 in the laboratory of South
Ostrobothnia Hospital District in Finland.
GE: We demonstrated the solution in Norway and customers
got so excited, they wanted to start using it immediately.
Customers cannot wait for the product to be launched. It is
a very simple solution that can be used almost at once, the
little training needed takes less than an hour.
Tieto is about to launch a solution that contributes to improved patient safety and treatment. Tieto’s Gunilla Eriksson,
Product Manager, Laboratory, and Aila Töyrylä, Development Director, Laboratory, talk about Lifecare Sampling, the first
portable product in Tieto’s Lifecare Laboratory solution series.
